Mugen Power 3600mAh battery for Nokia N97

It's.... another monster battery pack review, this time for the Nokia N97....

You'll have already read my review of the Mugen 2000mAh pack/cover for the Nokia E75? Well, this is similar, except it's for the N97 and - get this - the replacement battery is a whopping 3600mAh, almost four times the capacity of the original N95 battery and about 2.4 times the capacity of the N97's own BP-4L 1500mAh pack:

Just savour the statistic for a moment. 3600mAh. That should power the Nokia N97 in normal use for around a week on a single charge. And the cell is made by Mugen, who have an excellent reputation for reliable batteries, so this thing shouldn't burst into flames or do nasty things to your charger:

But. As you might expect, you can't get something for nothing, and the extra 2100mAh has to come from somewhere. And that somewhere is a bulky cell that's over twice as thick as the BP-4L (as you'd expect):

And a bulkier battery necessitates a replacement back cover for the N97 (of course). The end result is that your reasonably sleek N97 turns into something of a whale. Or maybe a cross between a whale and a brick(!):

The fit is pretty good and the back cover is made from similar plastics to the original. A sculpted cutout for the camera slider works well and there's a bonus, in the shape of a free stylus, sheathed in a silo, for those moments (in Web?) when a fingertip simply won't do. The silo unfortunately bulks the case out even more - I'd have been much happier without it:

In fact, there's a second bonus, in that you get two back covers, one white and one black, to match your original device. In practice, I found the effect of mixing the colours quite striking, as seen here:

It's at this point that sceptics will say "But I can buy three replacement BP-4L batteries for the price of that Mugen monstrosity!" And they'd be right. But there's a lot of hassle in continually powering down to not only slot in a new cell while mobile, but also keep swapping batteries before the trip, in order to charge each BP-4L battery individually. Having all the horsepower in the one battery does make things a lot simpler.

As with the other Mugen replacements, if you positively need your smartphone to keep going, for day after day, no matter what, then this 3600mAh pack will fill that requirement admirably. But at the expense of transforming the N97 (seemingly) into a form factor from days gone by. It's a compromise that few will be willing to make, but full marks to Mugen for trying.

And, if their designer's listening, how about a 2500mAh cell with slimmer back cover, keeping things flush with the camera bulge - and no silo? Now I for one would definitely go for that!

Comment: Stupidest accessory every!

If I was ever going to be away from electricity for a week i'd rather carry a spare battery or two than use that freakish contraption.

It makes the phone look like a hump back whale! :D

Comment: This is exactly what you need when going on long nature trips with "Always-on"- backlight,GPS,tracking,sight-seeing,sharing or wahtever gets you going, without that nasty nokia weewee reminding me every 2h that i will run out of power the next minutes. Had something similar for my N95. Works like a charm. Didn't hear any complaints from those reindeers about the ugly formfactor. Pricetag?

Comment: The thing reminds me of my (long dead) Palm LifeDrive from the side with that Mugen battery and cover on.

Comment: great idea but i would be scared for my safety given the advent of exploding batteries.

Comment: Exactly my thoughts. I'm kinda shocked by observing you guys promoting an acessory that goes against Nokia recomendations about original batteries being pulled in.

Comment: Well, I wouldn't give column inches to a cheap eBay no-name battery. But the Mugen people seem to have a good reputation and the price alone inspires confidence that they've tested these things properly.

Reassuringly expensive, eh Steve?

A bit like Bernie Madoff's commission fees.... worked for him, mostly.

Comment: Hi Steve,

can you tell me the total amounts in mm and weight of N97 equipped with this battery ?

YOOBAO BATTERY FOR NOKIA N97 (2800mAH)

It looks similar, has lower capacity but a lot cheaper. I might get one for outdoor trips.

Comment: It looks like the one with lower capacity, but when compared to price, this seems to be good.

Comment: I have used Mugen batteries for many years now and never had a problem with them. The cells that they used are very high quality.

Comment: This is daft.

If you're going somewhere where there wont be plug sockets for a week (and I can only think of camping/mountain walking as an example) then you probably don't want to be contacted anyway!

Steve, unplug. :)

Comment: Viewranger is useful during mountain walking trips, and having a large battery means that a person do not have to worry about changing batteries half way. Having a mobile is also useful during emergencies.

This does not mean that one should stop carrying paper maps and learn how to use a compass properly.

And then find out why it was a lot cheaper - it probably won't last particularly long.

There's been a lot of issues with the 3rd party/extended batteries - for Nokia and HTC devices at least, in that they just don't last long - the batteries just plain die on you.

Comment: How about a before and after shot from the side view. Just put the pictures next to each other. ;)

That will give us a better idea...

Thanks

Comment: Yes, this would be intersting. Please make some shots next to next in different angles, too.
Especially the stylus-side, which seems to add 2mm more to the thickness of the phone.
Are there any informations about recharging-times ?

Comment: Hi,

With the thick back casing, is it in the way of the camera lens when taking photos or videos?

Can someone from Mugen or Yoobao send a photo shot to: purposed@gmail.com with this "up-sized" battery attached?
Unregistered
Comment: Hi Steve,

in fact there are a lot of new postings, please don't forget to add some other pics which compare the N97 before and after mounting the battery-extension.

Thanks and best regards,

Kai
