New Nokia Maps 3.0, plus personalised mapping using Ovi
Today at Nokia World 2008, Nokia has released (via Beta Labs) the latest version of Nokia Maps, v3.0, as well as a full personalized 'online mapping experience' on Ovi (also now available). The combination of Nokia Maps 3.0 plus Ovi is claimed to be "the first free service that allows people to pre-plan a journey at home and synchronize with their phone, giving access to pre-planned routes and favourite destinations while on the move." Nokia Maps has also been updated to include higher resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for 216 cities across the world and terrain maps. Screenshots, info, download link (for selected devices) and notes below.

Taking a very Web 2.0 standpoint, Nokia say that "Maps on Ovi is becoming more than just a mapping tool. Over the coming months, Maps will become a destination for people to save and organize places, pre-plan trips and post-edit them. People can share their location and all their personally and socially meaningful content with friends, inviting them to join in activities and share experiences."

Other new options for Nokia Maps 3.0 include:
- a route overview screen in navigation mode.
- instant access to real time information such as camera alerts, safety spots and traffic information for selected countries.
- Wcities event guides that give real-time information for events and movies in over 450 destinations.
- better pedestrian navigation, adding straight-line guidance, which allows you to walk the shortest distance between point A and point B even if there isn't a proper (routing) road system available. Pedestrian routes now take in footpaths and parks.
- in pedestrian mode, beeps and vibrations alert you when you need to make a turn along your route.
- the level of detail in the maps has increased to the point that you can, for example, view multiple entrances to the same underground metro station.
The higher map quality is apparently a direct result of the relationship that now exists between Nokia and the bought-in NAVTEQ.
Downloading
Nokia Maps 3.0 (for all S60 3rd Edition FP2 devices except the N96) is now available on the Nokia Beta Labs web site. A version for the N96 and other S60 3rd Edition phones will be available shortly. The online (planning) version is now accessible from http://maps.ovi.com, though with some browser compatibility issues (it runs as a plug-in). Both versions are released as a Beta, so the usual precautions apply.
Of special note is that Maps 3.0 isn't directly compatible with previous versions, in that new maps and a new PC installer are needed. As a result (and presumably to avoid confusion), Maps 3.0 is only available via this new 'Nokia Maps Updater', which manages the process.
Existing navigation licenses are preserved, by the way.
Ewan's tried to install Maps 3.0 on the AAS N85 (the only non-N96 FP2 he and I have to hand), but failed, Maps Updater seems to be a little flaky at this stage.... If you've tried it, your comments most welcome!

At least it installs .. but consistently gives System Error ! on mine :frown:
- Additionally .. I couldn't downgrade to Nokia Maps 2.x .. so I'm without Nokia Maps on that phone - since the N85 has no firmware you can flash it with I strongly advise against trying this if you need Maps and only have one phone.
I've notified Nokia of this issue - but perhaps Steve, Rafe and Ewan could have a word in Oli's ear .. hey mate the N97 is lovely but there are poor N85 users out there without the means to fix their phones ..
And icon is named Smart2go. You cannot uninstall this. So I am without Maps now. Utterly rubbish from Nokia, like Nokia email and Vine.
I am using N85.
Not true, they will of blocked it from running on Samsung i8510.
From Beta Labs website:
"S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 support coming soon. "
Just 2 phones?

With the latest release, is Nokia Maps starting to look like a credible product. I mean when compatred to the likes of CoPilot and Garmin solutions (I'll put aside Steve's Nokia Maps is currently best solution senior moment aside).
Co-Pilot looks great and I am seriously thinking of making it my next purchase. But I do like the idea of regular updates and in particular, terrain mapping (not famous locations, more altitude etc. when dealing with complex terrain). Also when dealing with complex multi level junctions with overlapping road etc.
From what I've seen of it (on other platforms) iGo8 looks fantastic. But don't expect it to reach S60.
So is Nokia Maps reeally going places ? :)

At least you can get Maps back running by doing the following ...
1. using File Manager .. Locate the CITIES folder and DELETE it.
2. Locate the qf file and DELETE it.
3. Reinstall Nokia_Maps_2.0_4503_3.2_u.sis
4. Start Maps - no maps available - close Maps - recreates the directories.
5. Use Map Loader to add extra maps as required.
Sorry I don't have a fix for the icon or the App name as yet .. maybe someone clever could help out with that. :)
I'm going to play some more tonight, when I can try "hacking" the connection between my phone and PC and see if I can pretend I'm using a Nokia handset.
maybe due to external(BT) GPS only
I just thought that by now, 2 yrs later, they would have added more maps! Frankly Google Maps is far better as it covers everywhere - the big drawback being you can't pre-download the maps.
If you go to Nokia's website, it misleadingly says there are maps for 200 countries available. Digging further, it says there are non-navigable maps available for those countries... except that you can't get them from Map Loader, and if you browse to one of these countries on the Maps app on your phone, you'll find that the map is almost blank; the level of detail is almost non-existent. Not to mention you've incurred data charges as the map is downloaded.
So when the hell are Nokia gonna make more countries available, and when is AAS gonna stop blowing the trumpet for Nokia Maps while ignoring the fact that a lot of the world just has no maps in Nokia Maps...?
Using a n85
The poi at Nokia Maps 2 much better then at nokia maps 3 even at Jakarta. This is a example there is Tugu Hospital at Nokia Maps 2 but at Nokia Maps 3 it's not available. For name of the street Nokia maps 3 much more complete at least at jakarta.
When i use Nokia Maps 3 without voice navigation at car, the maps can rotate automatically base on direction of the car exactly just like u'r using maps with turn by turn navigation licensed but without voice.
