Exclusive (teaser): Tour Round Nokia Test Labs

Along with a couple of other invited guests, I was privileged to get full access to Nokia's testing labs at Farnborough this morning. Two teaser photos are below the break, but there's lots more to come, once I've digested and edited all the raw video and photos I took for All About Symbian. Watch this space!

Frozen!

The photo above is of a batch of N78's (I think) being batch key-prodded at minus 40 Centigrade. Amazing that Nokia go this far....

Bending tests

No, the photo's not warped - the phone is. Just one of the tests that all designs have to pass....

Comment: It's really not that amazing. Temperature occasionally drops below -40 in eastern and northern Finland during winter (and once in a decade or so in Espoo as well).

Comment: Yeah, I have to agree with the comment above, I've certainly been in weather as low as -30C, though that's quite rare and it seems to be getting rarer all the time.

Comment: Devices may work at -40C but the human body may have difficulty, it's very hard to breathe at those kinds of temperatures as it hurts and makes your lips freeze.

I think the chances of anyone actually using their phone at those temperatures or even taking it out of their pocket are about the same as Chergar winning next year's Grand National. :-)

Comment: A college friend of mine works for Nokia and moved to Finland about 2 years ago. Apparently they get a free phone every 2 years and he got a N70 at that time.
He'd always been used to warm weather (we're both from Brazil) so he didn't know what to expect in his first winter there. Well, he may be a little biased, considering the company he works for, but he told me the only portable device that keeps working outdoors is his N70. His iPod and his Palm PDA would not resist the extreme cold temperatures.
