N-Gage application now available for Nokia N78 and 6210 Navigator

The N-Gage platform's client is now available for the Nokia N78 and 6210 Navigator. The easiest way to get it is to visit n-gage.mobi/d (note there's no "www") on your phone's web browser, and select your phone from the list, which lets you download and install the app directly. Alternatively, you can download the app from the official N-Gage website and install using PC Suite. (Other phones compatible with the platform include the 5320 XpressMusic, N79, N81, N81 8GB, N82, N85, N95, N95 8GB and N96.)

If you want help with the direct download method click here to see our Really Easy Guide To Installing N-Gage.

Most compatible devices now have it built into the latest firmware, so you may not need to install the app separately, and the very latest compatible models (N85, N79, N96) come with N-Gage straight out of the box.

For any questions about the platform, see the All About N-Gage FAQ.

Comment: Well, by my reckoning we ought to expect the app to appear on the 6220 Classic next, that's as good as the other compatible models in computing terms (the 6220 has a 369mhz processor and 80mb of free RAM). Then perhaps some of the more recent Eseries models too? The E71 has sold shedloads, the E63 could do the same, it would be a shame if N-Gage was left off Eseries forever.

(No idea what's going on with the N73/N93 by the way except that Nokia said they'll decide on their compatibility by the end of this month. I wouldn't bet on them becoming compatible though...)

In any case, I've a feeling that Nokia will piss off a boatload of Nseries fanatics if they end up not supporting the N73 and N93 after all.

Comment: And this brings us version 1.10 build 1345, versus 5320's 1.10 build 1318, wonder if there's any difference. Probably no.

Yeah, I do that if I want to mention unsubstantiated or informal speculation that doesn't really belong in the article proper. Sorry if it's a breach of "netiquette" ;-) but this is site is a news one rather than a blog, so I try not to talk as myself in the news posts and save it for the comments instead.

Here's my take on this, it's a purely personal one:

First of all, the major blunder Nokia has made is promising the app for those phones way back in August 2007 and (so far) failing to deliver. It's particularly bad with the N73 as it's still on sale, some people may have bought it for N-Gage, so they're owed an apology and possibly something more from Nokia. Perhaps anyone who bought an N73 since August 2007 could get a voucher for some free games, or a discount on a new Nseries? They could prove when they bought it by giving their IMEI, which apparently lets Nokia look up the date of first sale.

The irony is that Nokia are STILL promising it as "coming soon" for N73 and N93 which may not be true at all ( http://www.n-gage.com/ngi/ngage/web/g0/en/get_ngage/devices.html ).

BUT... on balance I don't think they should add compatibility for the N73 and N93.

Those two phones are very old now, with low amounts of RAM and an old version of S60 compared to modern handsets. If they did become part of the platform it could make life much more difficult for developers, which means less complex games and/or longer time to market (N-Gage is slow enough with release dates as it is, anything which makes things worse must be avoided).

And to be honest I don't think most current users of the N73 or N93 would even be aware that N-Gage exists, because of the platform's soft launch. The main way people find out about it is by buying a model with the N-Gage app embedded, but it's too late to do that with the N93 or N73.

The N93 isn't on sale any more, the N73 will probably be discontinued soon, and very few people bother to install apps manually, especially if they're unaware the app exists. I can't see many users coming from those phones.

But Nokia definitely owes anyone who bought an N73 or N93 since Aug 2007 some kind of redress, at the very least a profound apology and explanation why compatibility couldn't happen (assuming it doesn't, they haven't actually said).

Sure hope so :)

It would be great if N-Gage appeared on the 6220 Classic and the E51.
