CorePlayer Mobile updated. Now supports YouTube!

CoreCodec just announced the availability of version 1.24 of its CorePlayer Mobile for all platforms including S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3. The YouTube support might not be interesting for some S60 3rd Edition users but for the UIQ 3 community, it is the icing on the cake because for the first time, FLV videos can be played on UIQ 3 smartphones without conversion. See below for UIQ 3 screenshots, links and comments.

Users can now search and watch YouTube videos directly on our UIQ 3 smartphones using CorePlayer Mobile latest version (1.24), there’s YouTube support which, during my test, worked beautifully (on 3G and WiFi connection).

This is one of the most requested functions from the UIQ 3 community and, although there is no support to play YouTube through the internet browser yet, the current function is useable and makes my P1i a true mobile workhorse and entertainment device. Commenting on the new release, Dan Marlin (aka Betaboy), CEO of CoreCodec, in his email to me said that this is only the beginning. “In future versions we are adding full YT support that includes video uploading, account login, related, more, email link, bookmarks. So this is really just the beginning of what our ‘Channels’ page will be…. Channels will list our current ‘HOT’ websites (like Veoh)”.

Here are some screenshots of CorePlayer Mobile's YouTube browser in action on my Sony Ericsson P1i :

Comment: Also note that I've posted a detailed review of the YouTube capabilities of the player, thoughly comparing it to MobiTube, to http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?p=374753 (see my last two posts there).

Comment: CorePlayer still doesn't have hardware acceleration... Palyback is very poor compared to hardware accelerated H264 video on the builtin realplayer on E90/N95.

I don't think they even utilise the FPU...

I was originall very optimistic about coreplayer but have disconvered they don't admit to any short comings and customer service/forum replys is just short of being rude.

On my n95 the backlight goes off about every 30 secs during video playback which is very annoying. I had to use smartlight to keep backlit on!

Some very simple things seems awfully complicated for the coreplayer developement team.

Comment: I get super smooth play back on an N95-2, but video freezing every 5 seconds or so on an E90. Anyone else experience this?

Comment: Yup, I too hope they introduce HW acceleration for H.264. Currently, it's pretty crappy over QVGA.

BTW, I've made a lot of additional benchmarks YouTube-wise, between MobiTubia and CP 1.2.4; will publish them in about an hour in the above-linked thread.

Strange - on my N95 v21, it's constantly on with the default CP settings. My system-level light timeout setting is 40 sec.
